Breath of Fire II has become notorious for its extreme encounter rate. The game uses three variants of the encounter rate, low, middle and high.
Most dungeons have the "high" encounter rate, resulting in an encounter every 13th step, on average. In practice this would often mean getting into
an encounter after taking only a few steps. I've been wanting to fix this for a long time, and today that day is finally upon us.

I included three patches that lower the encounter rate, one halves the encounter rate, the second turns it further down to 1/4 of the original game. If you are
really done with all those encounters, you'll like the third, -94%, patch. This will make random encounters a rare occurrence.
 
It is recommended to use the "Breath of Fire II - Double Exp and Zenny.ips" patch when you lower the encounters, to prevent you from getting under leveled for the bosses.

Please note that the HolySF will no longer lower the encounter rate. However, Smoke will still lower the encounter rate and the Collar will still raise the encounter rate.

You can combine these patches with other hacks, like Breath of Fire II Maeson or the English retranslation by Ryusui and d4s. Be aware though that the Double Exp and Zenny patch
is NOT compatible with Breath of Fire II Maeson. If you'd like these patches to work with the retranslation, please read the important notice below.

And for the creators, feel free to use these patches in your own hacks (with credits).

* d4s included a "checksum verification" when the game is first booted. This was intended to        *
* prevent people from distributing bad dumps and reproduction copies. As a result, if one applies a *
* mod in conjunction with the retranslation, the verification process fails and the game won't      *
* continue to the title screen.                                                                     *

* This can be circumvented by loading a SRM file that has already been initialized by the unaltered *
* patch. Therefore, those playing the retranslation will need Breath of Fire II (U) [!] Retrans.srm *

* Simply ensure the name of your ROM and your SRM file match, and put the SRM file in the same spot *

*How to play*
*************
1. You'll need a SNES emulator that is able to play Breath of Fire II. SNES9X or Higan are good choices. You can also play the game on original hardware.
2. Download the correct Breath of Fire II ROM (See the start of the ReadMe, and use Google)
3. With http://www.romhacking.net/hash/ you can check whether you have the correct ROM.
4. Go to: https://www.romhacking.net/patch/ to patch the ROM. (the .ips file is the patch file)
5. Start the patched ROM in your emulator.
6. Have fun!
