(insert elite ascii graphic here) Gal's Dungeon (18 October 2008) Official Readme File! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I. Introduction II. Project IIa. Project Members IIb. Tools IIc. History III. End-User Information IV. Thx V. Legal stuff that would never hold up in court ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Introduction Gal's Dungeon is an unlicensed Famicom Disk System game by Super Pig. This, of course, means that you're gonna see some 8-bit titties at some point. You play as private eye Kogorou Kurachi, tasked with rescuing the daughter of a crime syndicate boss from the mysterious "Phantom of 40 Faces". It's a 3D dungeon game, similar to the mazes in Wizardry and other terrible computer RPGs, where you progress through eight floors of the villain's master hideout to the thrilling final showdown! Each floor has a female guardian, whom you must play rock-paper-scissors against. If you win, you get the key to the next floor. You can pick up maps and compasses to guide your way, but always be wary for hidden traps and secret clues! Kogorou Kurachi is the designers' little parody of the Japanese fictional detective Kogoro Akechi, often considered the Japanese counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. His most frequent nemesis was the master criminal, the Fiend with Twenty Faces. So there's some history for you. Gal's Dungeon is a pretty fun game, and you can really see that the designers tried branching out beyond their usual crap games. It's short, which is a big plus, however it's very easy with savestates. But, most games are. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Project I intended to start work on the game right after it was first released in November 2006. But, I... didn't, and kind of forgot about it until March 2008. Then I worked on it off and on for a period of months, until today. It's not that it was particularly hard, but Gal's Dungeon wasn't exactly my highest priority, you understand. Assorted graphical changes that don't really matter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ End-User When the FDS format was first announced and released, Famicom Disk System images required a 16-byte header. However, that header's completely unnecessary, since the only real information stored in it is how many sides the disk has, something anyone with a brain can see just from looking at the filesize. Gal's Dungeon was originally released without this header, as are most FDS images these days. Therefore, your game image must NOT have a header when patching. Make sure your image is exactly 131,000 bytes, or this patch will absolutely not work. Since there's no such program as GoodFDS, people aren't running around with full FDS ROM sets, so finding this game (especially such a recently released game) may be difficult. It's listed in the No-Intro database as "Yakyuuken Part II - Gal's Dungeon (Japan) (Unl)" currently, so that'll be something for you kids to look for. At this point, a tutorial for how to use IPS patches isn't really necessary, what with all the fancy patching programs people have these days. Go to http://zerosoft.zophar.net/ipswin.htm for an IPS patcher if you need one. It's really easy, ok. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks! This translation is dedicated to Yuki, who dumped and released this game along with countless other FDS releases and redumps, many of them previously unreleased and very rare. Thank you Yuki! Release more games! Thanks to BMF54123 and KingMike, for some assembly help. BMF took a look at the ending for me (thanks!), and KingMike suggested a solution to an issue I was having with not enough space in the intro, which I wrote a routine for all by myself! My first ASM hack! However, in the end I changed my mind and cut the script down, and took the routine out. Whoops! Thanks to Shih Tzu for the excellent translation, and for the timely responses to the questions I had. I know this isn't going to be really high on the list of awesome translations you're known for. But, it was done as more of a favor to me, and I appreciate it, my friend. I still remember that phone call back in 1999 where we talked about how annoying Precis is. Thanks to Bongo`, who made the absolutely excellent and completely useful WindHex hex editor program. It's like Thingy, only better in every way, which makes it pretty much perfect. Thanks to oddigy for the webspace, and for many other things. I still intend to come visit you someday. Thanks to Sardius, for support and testing. You actually found a bug! Awesome! Thanks to Dirk, for not being totally disgusted with my love of emulation and ROM translations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Legal Made-up Stuff Even considering the fact that this is a patch for an game that was never licensed to run on the system it runs on, the legal status of ROM patches is still somewhat up in the air. These translations are only made out of the love for the games, and it is hoped that the copyright holders bear this is mind. Please feel free to redistribute this patch, so long as the readme (and only the readme) is distributed with it.
