Deep Dungeon II - The Hero's Crest v1.0 October 21, 2010 KingMike Translations (http://kingmike.emxuxhaven.net) *********** INTROUCTION *********** This is the continuation of Deep Dungeon - The Heretic War, for the Famicom Disk System. This game is also for the Famicom Disk System, released only five months after the original. In the time the last game, strange things have happened at the town of Dorl. A proclomation was made that Ruu has been resurrected. The people gathered in the temple to pray, until the swordsman Ral had been summoned by the heavens to enter the castle and fight Ruu. **** TEAM **** KingMike - tools, assembly, translation snark - translation Darkness Savior, Paul Jensen - spot translations *********** WHAT'S DONE *********** Should be complete. ************ WHAT'S BUGGY ************ Original game bug: Reach the (secret) maximum experience level, and the game gives you so many bonus points it will glitch and display your remaining points in hex, as it is the only level to give you a double-digit bonus. Oh well, it's a secret and doesn't affect play, so I didn't bother to fix it. No translation bugs I'm aware of. ********************* PATCHING INSTRUCTIONS ********************* You will need to unpack the tools archive with 7-zip (www.7-zip.org). First, you must use the included FDS Disk Image Expansion program. Give it your DD disk image filename. Then the next prompt will ask you to name a new file. This will be an expanded copy of the Japanese game. Then it will ask you for the expanded file list. Give it the included file dd2_expand.txt The program will ask what to do with the header. Choose the "force removal" option, as the patch is meant for an un-headered image. Then apply the IPS to the EXPANDED game image using your favorite patcher. I recommend LunarIPS if you want to apply the IPS patch, or upset (byuu.org) for the UPS patch, which can be used to patch or unpatch the translation. If you want to be able to import your Deep Dungeon 1 character into Deep Dungeon 2, I've included another tool that will attach your Deep Dungeon 1 FDS image as a second disk to Deep Dungeon 2. You can use the tool to remove the DD1 image after your game is saved. (note that some emulators will save and run a backup copy of FDS games in the save folder. If you import and save in a DD1+2 image and rename it to your DD2 file and it appears to still be a 2-disk (4 side) game, check your emu's save folder and delete the backup) I did fix one of the game's original bugs. The routine to partially resore an enemy's HP when they eat a vegetable soup was glitched, and most often would fully restore the enemy's HP. If you want to play the game as it originally was, I've included an "Un-fix" patch. Please patch this AFTER expanding the files and applying the translation. **************** EMULATION ISSUES **************** Should work in any emulator supporting the FDS (that is, most recent emulators). You'll need the FDS BIOS ROM. Don't ask me for it. It'll need to be named DISKSYS.ROM, and probably be put in the same folder as your emulator's executable. Also, for the DD1 save import option, I'm not aware of any emulators that allow you to swap in DD1 without rebooting the emulated console. In fact, I know at least one version of FCUEX where trying will seem to turn your DD2 image into DD1. (check your emulator's save folder and delete the backup of DD2) You'll have to use the included tools to temporarily turn your DD2 game into a 2-disk/4-sided game, with your copy of DD1 with your save file attached as a second disk. ***************** PLAY INSTRUCTIONS ***************** At the start of the game, you are presented with some options: Begin game - start from a saved file. Register name - start a new save file. Erase name - delete a save file Hero of the Heretic War - import a save from Deep Dungeon 1. You will need to use the enclose utility to attach DD1 as a second disk. See emulation issues. CONTROLS: D-pad: Move cursor Left/Right - turn Up - move forward. Start: Open save menu. B Button: Switch between menu and movement mode, and to cancel options. A Button: Open doors and confirm menu options. Your goal is to manuver through the 3D dungeon to access the next floor, until you reach the end of the game. The world consists of tower leading upwards, as well as a basement down into the ground. Services in the town of Dorl: Temple - You can recover your HP (for a price determined by the amount of HP you have lost), or you can pray. Marketplace - You can buy or sell tools or equipment. View Items - View your items. Castle - Enter the dungeon. Inside the dungeon: Status indicators: Level - your experience level. Higher levels I think affect the probability of spells working and such. Also, enemies will run away at higher levels. HP - Hit points. You die when its 0. Recover at an inn or by eating Bread. You can increase the limit by gaining experience levels. EX - Experience points. Get these by beating enemies. When it reaches certain predetermined (never revealed) amounts, your Level will go up, along with maximum HP, and maybe AP or AC. And you have various actions you can take. Fight - attack an enemy in combat, or hit a friendly person, if you're evil. Items - use an item. Escape - run away from an enemy... maybe. Search - search the ground for hidden items. Speak - talk to friendly people. Useless for enemies. View Status - In addtion to your HP, EXP, Level, you can view max HP and your other stats: AP - Attack power. Higher values increase the limit of damage that can be done. But note that the game randomizes the amount actually done, so even with the maximum AP, you'll still do a lot of weak blows. AC - Armor class. Your defence power. Affects how much damage you can possibly take when hit. Agility - Supposedly this affects the odds of dodging the enemy's attacks. Luck - Supposedly this affects the success rate of your attacks. You can also see how many more EXP points you need for the next Level. Basic items on your journey: Veggie soup - recovers a random amount of HP. (enemies may recover their HP with the Hait spell) White shroom - removes Poison status. Death cane - casts deadly magic on an enemy. Rune symbol - tries to seal the enemy's spells for about 3 turns. Mist bell - tries to put the enemy to sleep for about 3 turns. Hand mirror - view your current location in the dungeon, as well as a minimap. Bangle - This alerts you if something is hidden on the tile in front of you. (It won't tell you WHAT it is, but it could be alot of things: enemies, thorns, traps, pits, rotation tiles, friendly NPCs, notes, treasure) Pegasus wing - You can teleport back to dungeon entrance, but sometimes it will warp you into a wall and you die. You can hold up to 9 Veggie soups and White shrooms at one time. The Death cane, Rune symbol and Mist bell cost 3 HP per use, the rest are unlimited. Basic hints: There are lots of places in the dungeons where an enemy will always attack (the enemy may be randomized, but there will always be an enemy). Reaching a high enough experience level on each floor will stop the random encounters. (though you will still encounter enemies on pre-determined forced-encounter tiles) SAVE OFTEN! Especially because battles in this game are based on luck more than anything. ********* COPYRIGHT ********* Original game (c)1987 by Humming Bird Soft.
