KNIGHT LORE (FDS) Translation by Psyklax v1.0 (20171210) CONTENTS 1. Intro 2. ROM Information 3. Final Thoughts INTRO This is a 100% English translation of Knight Lore for the Famicom Disk System. The menu screen and disk loading messages have been translated, as that is the only Japanese text in the game. ROM INFORMATION This patch will work with the disk file listed in the TOSEC set. A note on CRC32 values for FDS images: the CRC can be different on the file you are using because of several reasons. The disk write date can be different, and the save game file on the disk can be different. The patch should still work in this case - usually any problems will become immediately obvious upon starting the game. I have included two patches: one for headered FDS files and one for unheadered files. If you don't know whether your file has a header, simply make two copies and apply one patch to each. The file that works correctly when starting up is the correct one. This patch is in xdelta format, because it adds data in the middle of the file, and a regular IPS patch would simply include everything after that point, rather than just the part that was changed. You can use Delta Patcher (see below) to patch your disk image, but you may need to turn off "checksum validation" if your file has slight differences to the one originally used for this patch. I was aware of Knight Lore on the ZX Spectrum, and had no idea the Famicom got a port, although the gameplay is a little different. It was also interesting from a hacking perspective: I was new to hacking the FDS, and in ROM hacking you can't just add data to the middle of a ROM. The ROM has to be a particular size, and even one extra byte hits everything out and causes the game to not run. Because FDS uses disks, there are files which can be any size you like, and so adding data to them is relatively easy, once you know how the file system works. So even though I was only editing the main menu and the disk loading messages, I still needed a few more bytes here and there, and was able to just add more data, a much more convenient solution than the problems you can have with ROMs. Overall, not a huge project, but a fun one nevertheless. You should definitely give the game a try, too, it's kind of fun!
