========================================================== ==========Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom============ ===========================V 1.03========================= Genre: Text Adventure Source language: Japanese Platform: NES Patch language: English Author: Pennywise/Eien ni Hen E-mail: antoniusblocko@protonmail.com http://yojimbo.eludevisibility.org/ ====================================================== About Princess Tomato ====================================================== Project History: This project probably began around 2013 when I asked Eien ni Hen if there were any games she'd like to translate and so the project was born. I did a little bit of work on the project, but the project sat for 7 years after Eien had finished translating. I suppose the reason it sat for so long is that I didn't feel like working on it. Of course there were also many other projects vying for my attention and a lack of free time, but it is what it is. It's done now. It actually took me a few months to finish hacking the game. Truth to be told, I'm kinda burned out from it and don't feel much like going into the details. But the ROM was expanded for a huge script, commands were originally 8 characters, but have been hacked to 9. Most of the game's graphics were compressed, but the game can actually load uncompressed graphics too. I used Mesen to get memory dumps to access the decompressed graphics and then store them somewhere else in the ROM. Lots of other stuff done as well. One thing I will say is that I did end up liking the game. So much so that I'm seriously considering the PC-88 version of the game. That seems to be the most accessible version to hack. Maybe Eien will rejoin me and I can get it done in less than 7 years. ====================================================== Version History ====================================================== 1.0 - Initial release 1.01 - bugfix patch 1.02 - bugfix patch 1.03 - endgame bugfixes ====================================================== Translator's Comments ====================================================== The original English version of this game had a lot of stuff changed or straight-up removed. Some of it was for censorship reasons, but I feel like a large part of the game's personality got lost in the original translation. There are a LOT of puns in this game. I had to localize most (if not all) of them. The only one that didn't quite fit is うどの大木, a phrase meaning "huge but useless." I eventually settled on "Ugly Tree," as in "He fell out of the Ugly Tree and hit every branch on the way down." Master Takahashi: Refers to Toshiyuki Takahashi, an executive of Hudson Soft and a Japanese celebrity. Hachike the Bee: A combination of Hachiko (the famous Akita), and the Hudson Soft mascot. Phone cards: Prepaid cards for use in Japanese payphones. Mobile Veggie Suit: This is totally a Mobile Suit Gundam reference, and I'm sad it was removed in the original translation. Shimenawa: These are large ropes used to ward off evil spirits, but the one in-game is used to contain a monster (Saladron) within the shrine-tree. I translated it as "Holy Rope." Jizo: Jizo is a Japanese divinity who protects women, children, and travelers. There are thousands of Jizo statues throughout Japan, though they are most commonly found by roadsides and in graveyards. Percy's "roses are red" poem: He originally just tells Cucumber that the castle's walls are white, which I think is a reference to the famous outer walls of Himeji castle. ====================================================== Patching Instructions ====================================================== Due to limitations in the IPS format and the changes I made to the ROM, I'm only supporting BPS and xdelta formats for this game. You can download a program to patch from here: http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/1040/ http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/598/ Apply the patch to the Japanese ROM: Salad no Kuni no Tomato Hime (J).nes We would be highly grateful, if you find some time to contact us with proposals or corrections. Information on found bugs or corrections would be highly appreciated. P.S. Support the game industry by buying used games! Even if the money doesn't go to the developers directly, as the games become rare and harder to find, the price goes up, and people become more inclined to buy new releases "while they can!" ====================================================== Credits go to: Pennywise - hacking Eien ni Hen - main translation TheMajinZenki - misc spot translations Esperknight - script extraction FlashPV - title screen design Graphicus - misc graphic design Cospefogo - english manual design Xanathis - testing All those who contributed into this process. ===================================================== Compiled by Pennywise.
