It's heavily influenced by the classic Konami MSX game "The Maze of Galious" and anyone who has played that title will probably recognize the similarities very quickly. You play the whip-wielding Indiana Jones-esque archaeologist Lemeza Kosugi as he investigates the ancient ruins of La-Mulana in an attempt to find its treasure and one-up his father, who is trying to get the same treasure as well. The game is huge, with many different areas to explore and dozens of items and weapons to find. Each area has a large variety of puzzles and traps (many of them quite fiendish) and you need to solve the puzzles in each area to discover the Ankhs and Ankh Jewels, which allow you to fight the eight Guardians of the ruins. To solve the puzzles you'll need to be able to read the tablets scattered throughout the ruins, which will require a Hand Scanner and translation software for the portable MSX that Lemeza has brought along on the adventure. Your Hand Scanner will also allow you to find items and search the bones of less fortunate adventurers. La-Mulana is one of the longest freeware games I've played in quite some time--my first playthrough took me 26 hours, and even if you knew exactly what to do for each puzzle in advance I'd still bet the game would take at least 10-12 hours to complete, not counting the bonus dungeon. =============== 2.Patch History =============== February 1st, 2007 - 1.01: -Fixed some bugs in the bonus dungeon where some testing data had not been cleared. -Updated the patch/readme to indicate that GR3's site has gone down. -Corrected a few typos and misspellings. -Renamed the 10x cartridge to their official Western names, "Game Master/Game Master 2" January 20th, 2007 - 1.0: -Initial release of the patch. =============== 3.Patch Credits =============== GR3 Project team - EXE/intro screen/ending screen hacking Ian Kelley - Text Translation, Map/Datafile/Graphics hacking Special Thanks go to... --The GR3 Project team, especially Naramura, who not only gave me permission to translate the game in the first place, but did EXE file hacking that I couldn't figure out, went way above and beyond the call of duty by playing through the hacked version to look for screwy text formatting, not to mention enduring the endless barrage of stupid questions I asked them. --Gideon Zhi, for allowing me to host the patch on AGTP. --My five beta testers, who worked long and hard to find errors and formatting mistakes. ========================== 4.Application Instructions ========================== The first thing you need to do is download La-Mulana and extract the contents of the zipped file into a directory. If you downloaded the game direct from GR3's site (no longer possible as GR3's site has gone down) you will also need to download the manual and unzip it into a directory called "manual" inside the main La-Mulana folder, as the patch translates the manual as well. Just run the "La-Mulana Translation Patch.exe" file on the directory you have just extracted to and you should be ready to play! Be sure to check out the manual for information on controls, items, etc. "00.html" is the file you should open to get started. ============== 5.Known issues ============== None as of yet, but if you find any errors or bugs, please email me at masakadokou@yahoo.com! =================== 6.Final advice/Tips =================== Some very minor spoilers here, but here are just a few tips in advance: --Don't get frustrated! Some of the puzzles are very difficult and downright diabolical, but most can be solved later if you can't figure them out initially. A lot of the puzzles require some lateral thinking, so it can help to try and figure out a less-than obvious interpretation of the hints. --It can help to take notes or screenshots of hints as you go. Some tablets contain hints for puzzles in areas that you won't come across until later; taking notes can save you the time of having to go back to look for an old hint. On that note, not all of the clues correspond to a puzzle in the same area you'll find them. --Don't defeat all eight of the Guardians until you've found everything in the Shrine of the Mother. Some treasures in that area will be blocked off forever if you don't get them before all eight of the Guardians are dead. --Experiment a lot with ROM combinations. A tone will sound if you combine ROMs that have a special effect. Some of these effects can be quite useful!
