Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners Version 1.0e ============================================================================== Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners is a horror RPG set in the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt in the year 1998. Archaeologist Tetsuya Tsuchida and Dr. Koji Kuroe realize a huge set of ruins underneath the Great Pyramid only to discover it is laid with booby traps. Not wanting to let this stop them from uncovering the secrets behind the pyramid, Professor Tsuchida sought out the help of eight tourists and their tour guide for one hell of a sightseeing tour they'll never forget. This game was made by the 21 year old Makoto Serise, the pen name of Makoto Yaotani, using RPG Tkool Dante 98 II, while the music was composed by Kei Mizuho. It was released on May 31st, 1998. In August 1998, Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners won the Platinum Award in the monthly contest, The Internet Contest Park, held by the Japanese group ASCII. It netted the two man team 150 thousand yen (~$1,040 USD). It is the only game in the existence of the contest to receive the Platinum Award. Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners also ranked fourth in ASCII's Top 10 Popular Works in 1998, and ninth in the poll for the Most Popular Works of All Time (which is comprised of various games made in ASCII's RPG Tkool engine). It also won the Third Annual ASCII ENTERTAINMENT competition under the "ASCII Tkool Product" category, netting them 1 million yen (~$8,190 USD). This game had also been covered in various Japanese gaming magazines. Now the game should be running at normal speed. Q: WHAT DOES PERET EM HERU MEAN? A: Peret em Heru is the transliteration of the Egyptian term "prt m hrw," meaning "coming forth by day" or "emerging forth into the light." Peret em Heru is also known as the Book of the Dead, a collection of funerary text and spells used to help guide the dead in the other world. Q: WHY DID YOU GIVE PROFESSOR TSUCHIDA A PERSONAL NAME? A: To those unfamiliar with the Japanese version, Professor Tetsuya Tsuchida was simply named Professor Tsuchida in the Japanese version; he wasn't given a personal name at all. We personally felt this gave him some lack of depth compared to the rest of the cast who all have a full name, especially with Tsuchida's reputation and presence. For that reason alone, we wanted the players to feel more connected with him, which is why he is referred to in the text boxes as "Tsuchida" in the English version, rather than "Professor" as in the Japanese version. We decided to name him Tetsuya from the script hidden away in the data of the game in which his name was Tetsuya Tsuchida, originally a 29 year old professor renowned all over the world. Q: IS THERE A WAY TO RECRUIT DR. KUROE OR PROFESSOR TSUCHIDA? A: Unfortunately, those two teammates are always impossible to recruit. D: QBRF GUR "FUBHG!" NPGVBA ERNYYL FREIR AB CHECBFR VA GUR TNZR? When I first heard of this game, my initial thoughts as I have never seen a non-action horror game with an Egyptian spin before, was, "How does that work?" As it turns out, it works remarkably well. The characterization of Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners is phenomenal, as can be attested to by the interactions between Dr. Kuroe and Professor Tsuchida. Their dialogue was the source of many a joke and conversation amongst the team here at Memories of Fear. Though as it turns out, the tale between them is a tragic and twisty one. This is also our first foray into the deeper history of RPG Tkool games, as this game is run on a much older and non-standard system for the modern audience. That's right, we're rockin' RPG Tkool Dante 98 II! Woo! Naturally, this made things quite different for us than the standard RPG Tkool 2000 and XP fare. The trials were also quite the interesting way for the game to progress. Each section focused on the biggest character flaw for each teammate, and it was up to you to identify it and the action you must take to rectify the problem before the Pharaoh Khufu kills your hapless compatriot. I personally would call this game, in its truest sense, an "Action RPG," meaning you must use your "Action" skills to win. This in turn makes the gameplay quite interesting as you must use the "Actions" you accrue throughout the game to save everyone. Ultimately, this adds to the game's replayability as it's worth at least seeing everyone's living scenes and their death scenes and how it affects the course of the game and the dialogue. To break it down, there's 49 different combination of endings with the different party combinations of members who are alive and dead, though you certainly don't need to play 49 different times to see a majority of the dialogue in Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners. I hope everyone enjoys their trip to Giza! May Khufu bless you all with his power! THE MEMORY, ENIGMAOPOEIA (EDITOR): - This game was recommended to us by our playtester, Ajogamer. One day he wanted to stream this PC-98 game called Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners he came across. Initially upon watching it, I was uninterested. There were some things that I liked such as utilizing actions through the menu, which reminded me of performing similar actions in old school RPGs like Dragon Warrior. The graphics were also well done and I enjoyed the Egyptian setting, but I wasn't sold on Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners until at the last segments of the game where I was completely blown away. I am really glad that I decided to stick to the very end because this game was totally worth translating! This game is filled to the brim with personality, from funny lines (it's worth having Ayuto use his "Shout!" command almost everywhere) to interesting developments between the cast of characters. Upon editing Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners, I felt that the game was rushed, possibly due to making this game available by the contest's deadline. There were a lot of mistakes in the script where characters were called by another name, one character had her name misspelled, there were some inconsistencies with name references, one character still had her previous name listed, and some parts of the game's story about Ancient Egypt was inaccurate. There were also some issues with the map graphics not being displayed properly and specific events had to be tweaked in order to make them work. A lot of polishing, research, and work was put into this game so it can be the best it can be. THE PLAYTESTER, AJOGAMER: - Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners is a pretty special project for me; I originally came across the game in Japanese a couple years back, and quickly fell in love with it. Despite being unable to read a single word, it really stood out with its varied cast, unique Egyptian setting, and the many interesting events that take place throughout. As a result, I was quite happy to see the English translation become a reality, and to help polish it up. Upon seeing it in English, I was also very pleased to see that the script and story are also quite enjoyable. The game's varied cast of characters are a big credit to this aspect; they're all pretty well-written and full of personality, to the point that I think people will likely have their favorites, and may even grow attached to a few of them. Another neat aspect of the game is the changeable fates of most of the characters. Aside from a few exceptions, every character has the potential to die if you fail to save them, which can make runthroughs of the game fairly different. As a result, I'd suggest players do at least two runthroughs to see the different outcomes the game has to offer: one in which you save everyone, and another in which everyone dies. Saving people will let you find out more about the characters in question, while killing people off is necessary to see many of the game's creepier scenes, so both outcomes are well worth experiencing. In any case, I hope you all enjoy Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners! MEMORIES OF FEAR @ http://www.memoriesoffear.com ============================================================================== !!!DO NOTE THIS SECTION CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS!!! Here are some translation notes for Peret em Heru: For the Prisoners. Some of them will contain major spoilers for the game, so we strongly suggest you read them only after you've finish the game. To not spoil players, it is encoded in ROT13. To decipher it, please visit @ http://www.rot13.com Breast Fire - Breast Fire is the most powerful attack used by Mazinger Z from the super robot manga and anime of the same name. Cell Phone - In the Japanese version, the cell phone was accidentally called a pager in some maps, specifically when Ayuto is on the boat. We decided to make this consistent with the rest of the lines and call it a cell phone. Emergency Telephone Number - In the Japanese version, Ayuto mentions he should dial 1-1-0, which is the emergency telephone number used to reach police services in Japan. However, it would not work as well considering they're in Egypt; their emergency phone number is 1-1-2. So to not get too much into schematics, we simply wrote it that Ayuto wants to call the cops. Indiana Jones - Ayuto will make a comment about how he feels like Indiana Jones. This is in reference to Harrison Ford's role as renowned archaeologist Indiana Jones in the Indiana Jones trilogy. Katsuya Nomura - Katsuya Nomura was one of Nippon Professional Baseball's (NPB) greatest players as a catcher. There is a Japanese meme where people comment that his wife, Sachiyo, looks exactly like him. Mena House Oberoi, The - Although the name of the hotel where the tourists and their tour guide booked wasn't specifically named in the game, the game's map called it "The Oberoi." This is in reference to the Mena House Oberoi, a famous hotel located in the city of Cairo in Giza, Egypt, which is located 8 minutes from the Great Pyramid. Saori Kawamoto - In the game's data and on specific maps, Saori's full name was written out as Saori Kawamoto. Kawamoto was her old surname that unfortunately wasn't changed in the finalized script. We made sure that she is consistently named named Saori Shinoda in the English script. Sean Connery - Nei will make an off-hand comment on how Professor Tsuchida is a "poor excuse for Sean Connery." This is in reference to Sean Connery's role as Archaeologist Henry Jones, Sr. in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Tsuyoshi Shinjo - Tsuyoshi Shinjo is a former Japanese professional baseball outfielder. Shinjo is the second Japanese-born position player to play a Major League Baseball game and was the first Japanese-born player to appear in the World Series. Yelling at the Ocean - Nei comments to Ayuto when he yelled at the river of death, "Uh, this isn't the ocean, so why are you randomly yelling at it?" People will yell or swear at the ocean for many reasons: The ocean cannot yell back at you, someone may have lost something precious to them in the ocean, it can be a great way to relieve stress, and various other reasons. --------------------------------------- Ayuto will say a lot of amusing random quotes whenever he is using the "Shout!" action. When it came to the lines, if the work was licensed in America, we translated it exactly from the source. However, if a work was not licensed in America, we localized it to a line we felt was suited better for an English speaking audience. Here are the references behind his shouts: "GACKT RULES!!" - Gackt Camui is a Japanese musician who was once a member of the Japanese visual kei rock band, MALICE MIZER. "It's cramped! It's dark! I'm scared!" - This is reference to a line commonly said by Shutaro Mendou from Urusei Yatsura. "L'ARC~EN~CIEL RULES!!" - L'Arc~en~ciel was a Japanese rock band. "LA'CRYMA CHRISTI RULES!!" - La'cryma Christi was a Japanese visual kei rock band. "Later, pops!!" - This is reference to the infamous line that Arsene Lupin III says to Inspector Zenigata in Lupin the 3rd. "MALICE MIZER RULES!!" - MALICE MIZER was a Japanese visual kei rock band. "Poop-poop-pee-doo!!" - The original Japanese line is, "Poop! Poop! Urine jar!" a reference to the gag manga, The Holy MoteMote Kingdom (Shinsei Motemote Oukoku). We decided to localize this line which could serve as a double meaning. One could see this as the infamous line said by Betty Boop, while it is also a common enough line that one could see this as having the same scatological humor presented in the original Japanese line. "Say, kids, what time is it? ...It's Howdy Doody Time!" - The original Japanese line is, "It's 8 o'clock... the gang's all here!!!" This is in reference to the television program, Eight O'Clock Show! (Hachiji da yo! Zen'in Shuugou). We decided to localize this to the famous line from Howdy Doody. "SIEG NAON!!!" - This line is a pun off of Gihren Zabi's trademark salute in Mobile Suit Gundam, "Sieg Zeon!" However "Zeon" was changed to "Naon" to reference The Holy MoteMote Kingdom (Shinsei Motemote Oukoku), which the pun originated from. "Today's a good day to be me! It's good to be Big G!": - The original Japanese line is, "I am Gian!!" This is a reference to Takeshi Gouda in Doraemon. To localize this line, we used the line sung by the same character from Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future. "TOSHI doesn't have to HYDE his age, even to this day!!!" - The original Japanese line can literally be read as, "hyde is actually pretty old!!!" However, the word for "old" is also read as Toshi, who is the Japanese vocalist for the heavy metal band, X Japan. hyde is a Japanese vocalist for the rock band, L'Arc~en~Ciel. To incorporate both puns into the shout, we worded it the opposite way, since "hyde" is homophonous to the word "hide." "Useless! Useless! USELESS! USELESS! USELESS!!!" - This line is a reference to Dio Brando's infamous line from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. "Well, now I gotcha, Lupin! You're under arrest!" - This is reference to the infamous line that Inspector Zenigata says to Arsene Lupin III in Lupin the 3rd. "You're not fully clean unless you're zestfully clean!": - The original Japanese line is, "LAVENUS!!" This is in reference to the hair care product, Lavenus, known for their catchy commercial song. We decided to localize this with an equally catchy commercial song for the deodorant bar, Zest. ============================================================================== 05/31/1998 = Released to the public. 09/26/2014 = "Memories of Fear" released Ver.1.0e. - Edited graphics, coding, and unnecessary maps. - Fixed and corrected bugs that were present in the Japanese version. ==============================================================================
