Sega Saturn Grandia English Patch February 20, 2023 This Patch will apply the official English Translation from the Sony PlayStation version of Grandia to the original Japanese Sega Saturn release. To follow the progress of this hack please be sure to pay attention to the thread at SegaXtreme.net: https://segaxtreme.net/threads/translating-grandia.24330/ ---------------------------------------------------------------- C O N T E N T S ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Change Log ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Source Image and New Patcher Info ---------------------------------------------------------------- The Image used for this was a rip from my personal copy of the game. According to redump there are no different revisions for Grandia, so any rip should work. The new patching software by KnightOfDragon has made it so patching can be done easily with just about any good rip of the game in various different formats. As such the need for documenting checksums has become a bit meaningless as depending on what format you chose to export the patched game with, it will create a different checksum. Currently the program is having an overall but KnightofDragon, so the current versions hosted may not work with the latest patch. As a result I have included the version I used to build and test the patch with it. When version 2.0 is released, the patcher program can be found here: https://segaxtreme.net/resources/sega-saturn-patcher.73/ ---------------------------------------------------------------- 2. How to apply the patch ---------------------------------------------------------------- This version of the patch has upgraded to using the new SegaSaturn Patcher program. On top of being able to patch any good rip in various formats, it also supports multidisc games in one patch file. So the same patch file will be used for both discs. This patch REQUIRES version 1.95 or higher of the SegaSaturn Patcher program. To patch, follow these steps: 1) Open the SegaSaturn Patcher Program. 2) Select the Disc or Image you wish to patch. 3) Click "Add Patch" 4) Select the included SSP File. 5) Select the Image Type you would like your patched game to be in. 6) OPTIONAL: The patch will change the region to US, if you'd like it to be Region Free, click "Make Region Free". 7) Click Build Image and save it to the destination of your choice. 8) OPTIONAL: While not required, I'd recommend naming Disc 1 GRANDIA and Disc 2 GRANDIA_2. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Known Issues ---------------------------------------------------------------- This is a final release build. So at this point all major issues should be fixed. I will no longer be addressing any minor issues such as typos or minor errors that were already there in the original Playstation script. However if a major game crashing bug is found, please report it to the thread so it can be fixed. If playing on an emulator, the preferred emulator is Mednafen as it seems to behave the closest to the real deal. If Mednafen crashes, it's very likely that a real Saturn will crash. SSF is the next best emulator to use, but there are instances where it will run fine where as Mednafen and a real Saturn will crash. So keep that in mind. If you encounter a bug, please post it on the SegaXtreme thread or post it on the SegaXtreme discord. When posting a bug please include the following: - What exactly happened? (Game Crashed, Typo, Garbled Text, etc.) - Screenshots or Videos if possible. - What where you doing when it happened? - Where in the game where you when it happened? - A copy of your save file from your emulator. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Notes about Running on Real Hardware ---------------------------------------------------------------- The patch does work on real hardware so there's nothing stopping you from burning a disc if you want to. However the following things should be taken into account. 1) Grandia is VERY picky about the Burn Speed used and the quality of the media you use. The cheap Verbatims or Memorex CD-Rs you buy at Best Buy will most likely not cut it. You'll need to shell out for some JVC Taiyo Yudens. 2) Grandia does NOT play nice with 50Hz. So PAL users will need a 60Hz switch installed most likely. The reasoning for this comes down to two things. First Grandia uses a custom Video Codec. So if the burn isn't up to snuff you're going to get garbled audio and stuttering FMVs at best, if not a complete hang. The other reason is that Grandia relies heavily on streaming data off the disc constantly for sounds, as well as doing lots of redundant reads and loads from the disc. If the burn isn't good, the game is going to be unstable. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 5. About the Splash Screen ---------------------------------------------------------------- This is something a bit controversial that I'm honestly not a fan of seeing in patches. I personally feel credit for these kinds of projects should be left to a simple line or two in the game's credit sequence and that's it. However some groups of people have forced my hand on this. Unfortunately there have been people trying to claim they were involved in this project who had nothing to do with it. Others have tried to claim they were the sole people releasing it or even trying to sell it and make money off of it. Some have even gone so far as to tell people not to go and get the official new releases of the patch and instead only use their pre-patched images that are years behind in updates. The impact this has had on the beta test of this patch can't be understated. It made it so I was effectively not getting any valuable feedback on bugs and issues because people weren't coming to the official thread on SegaXtreme for updates. As a result new versions weren't getting tested well and bugs weren't making their way back to me. I'd also get bug reports from archaic versions that were being distributed that I'd already fixed. This just cluttered the backlog as I had to verify the issue wasn't reintroduced. This slowed down progress significantly and is why the patch as been stuck in a Release Candidate phase for so long. So in short, the Splash Screen is there to make it clear who made the patch and where it's officially hosted. The goal is to make it very difficult for these people to try and claim involvement or ownership of these projects going forward. If there comes a point where this is no longer necessary I have no problem removing the Splash Screen and even have a version ready to go without it. But unfortunately that's not what the current situation is. And to be clear, I am not talking about CDRomance. While I may not like that things are hosted there pre-patched, the owner has been more than polite and accomodating with these projects. He keeps them up to date, makes it clear it's a beta test, points back to the original source and gives proper credit. I have no problems with him. ---------------------------------------------------------------- 7.1 Disc 1 Change Log ---------------------------------------------------------------- Disc 1 v0.05 (4/4/2019): - Initial Beta Test Release Disc 1 v0.051 (4/4/2019): - Fixed Patching Process Disc 1 v0.052 (4/6/2019): - Fixed Bug which had the game crashing at Parm.
