Disclaimer ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. What's New? 0.37 (1-23-98) [Old School Release] - This is exactly what was on the RPGe page before we took it down but it'll be back and better than ever... As for what's in this patch, everything's the same except that I've replaced timko in the DQ1 dept. and Thermopyle is now working on DQ2, all these changes will be represented in the next release. 0.37 (12-26-97) - BUG FIX: Well.. you all know about that blasted naming screen right? NOW IT WORKS! P-Funk dug through the rom to find the 1 byte that was the bane of my existance! Now your characters can have lower-case letters! - DQ2 Text scrolling intro redone... - LOTS of text allignment redone... - Changed the Credits back, now has Timko's name in it (for those who didn't notice that in .36) 0.36 (12-23-97) - Town south of Kol: 35% translated - Tantagel: 90% translated - Weapon Shops: 90% translated - DQ1 Key shops: 100% translated - Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanzaa, and foremost of all... HAPPY BOXING DAY... (no, I'm not canadian... and the opening credits change is a temp thing) - Some text allignment redone... Timko Requests: An SRAM file that has access to the Dragonlord's lair. 0.34 (12-15-97) - New 13x16 (large) font!! (Based off of J3d!'s DQ6 font) Looks very nice - More done on Tantegel Castle (95% of people in the beginning, 75% overall) - Breconnary: 85% (100% of people outside of locked doors) - Garinham (the town NW of Tantegel Castle): 75% - Kol (the forest town east of Tantegel Castle): 75% - Beginning to add double letter tiles in the large font (they will be so nicely done you wouldn't be able to tell that they're there!). I only have "ai" done, but that'll change in the future! [MagitekKn: I think this is a great idea, there is a lot of un-used font space in DQ1&2 and the tiles are large enough to handle 2 nice sized letters] - Rewrote portions of the battle engine text, and added a couple of things (learning spells, finding treasure chests). - Added Icon in 8x8 for spears. - The only 'bug' is a problem with the 'Key' item in the 8x8 font, it 'spills' a bit, this isn't a problem and will not affect your enjoyment of DQ1&2... 0.31 (11-12-97) -Level Up Messages are translated (pretty good translation if I say so myself!) -The southern monolith is translated -Accidently left one of the guards in the monolith west of Leftwyne untranslated -DQ2 Clinics are Translated (66%) -Fixed the formatting in DQ2 in many dialogues -Fixed even more monster names -Added a WHOLE BUNCH of new DQ1 monster and spell names! -Translated some of the dialogue in Tantegel Castle, about 25% complete. Notes from timko: Ignore the fact that people say numbers - it's for easy reference to the dialogue in my ROM editing proggy. Notice the new size of the patch - >19,000 bytes! Let's see ET top that! ^_^ 0.30 (11-10-97) <<>> -DQ2 Lots of character text... All the way up through Leftwyne,Cannock, and the monolith! *All but 1 person in Midenhall is translated *All but 1 person in Leftwyne is translated *All but 3-4 people in Cannock are translated -Fixed bug in status screen (Attack% was missing a space that corrupted the window a bit) -DQ2 Banks are open for business! (80% translated) -DQ2 Clinic menu translated. -The King's opening remarks are translated -The King's final closing remark is translated -The people of the western monolith speak english. -Level up messages translated -Mighty Blow! translated in battle ************* *Hey, you all know him and love him... I'd like to welcome our friend David *Timko back into the limelight. He single handedly brought this patch back up *to speed in an effort to defend RPGe's good name. He will hereby be working *on the DQ1 portion of this project. So all you DQ1 fans, expect DQ1 to begin *progress soon! 0.23 (10-20-97) -DQ2 Intro=COMPLETE! (finally!) -More people in Midenhall speak (girl in clinic, whirlpool man) -DQ1 treasure boxes are working (no item names yet) -Empty Treasure boxes say so. -Monster names: Slug, IronAnt (was Big Ant) -Cleaned font some more (t,i,some others) -King's Report on Status -90% when saving -66% when resuming 0.22a (9-16-97) -This one works... so read .22 for most of the info -Naming screen bug identified... but solution is a little tricky -Changed the opening credits (will probably change again) 0.22 (9-16-97) -The DQ2 intro is complete... (well up until the very end) -Cleaned 16x16 font (numbers are nicer, made some letters better) -Translated game deletion from menu -Added (,) and (') to 13x16 -Begun patching kanji bank D0 so that will speed the translation (or slow it if I patch all 512 characters) -Changed name in rom, Now DragonQuest 1&2 (not an 'N' with a ~) if this affects copier users let me know... -Naming screen is, ahem, sorted (see problems) 0.20 (7-31-97) - A new cleaner 8x8 font (Lufia's i think) thanks go the Thermopyle - A little more of the shops implemented (selling). Searching, (lack of) magic, locked doors, out of talking range all translated. ¤ King's guard, and a few ppl in Midenhall now talk. ¤ 1 monster added - Innkeepers are now english speakers - Font hacking has been a major time-eater... now translation should be a little faster. - The DQ2 intro WILL be complete in the next release! 0.1 (07-23-97) - Still only a little more implemented. Added the 16x16 font and that's about it. 0.01 (06-30-97) - Initial Release by RPGe, was previously under the work of Quatch and Lord Pinto. - First Release, few improvements from that of Quatch and Lord Pinto, mainly working on FF5e right now. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. How to Start First, patch the *ORIGIONAL* ROM w/ either of the following commands: Using IPS: ips dq1&2.smc dq1&2e.ips Using Ucon: ucon i dq1&2.smc dq1&2e.ips Now, load up DQ1&2 in your favorite emu (the ones compatible w\ DQ1&2 are listed later on.. See Section 5) and you should see the title screen within a few seconds. Press any button to go on. You're ready to start. More detailed instructions for things such as copiers and variations on the format of the DQ1&2 ROM can be found at http://www.dragonfire.net/~shadow1/ ------------------------------------ 2a. Controller functions: D-Pad: Move lead character in all 4 directions, move cursor up/down, in battle, move cursor all the way left or right to target a group of enemies or allies A Button: Menu B Button: No function X Button: Search/Talk/Door (depends on what's nearby) Y Button: No function Start : No function Select : No function L Button:\ > Same as X R Button:/ ------------------------------------ 2b. The Menu Screen The Menu Screen is the most important thing in DQ1&2. You can use Items, Equip stuff, see your Magic list, see your Status, and Search. ------------------------------------ 2c. Advanced Battle Tactics 1. Target enemies' weaknesses. (i.e. use an Ice spell on a fiery creature, use Lightning on anything that lives in water, and use Fire on any frozen creatures). This will do more damage on them than usual. [Ed: I didnt think DQ1&2 had elemental magics.] 2. Curative-type spells do good damage on Undead creatures (zombies, skeletons, ghosts, etc.) [Ed: I didnt think this one worked either!] 3. Take some time in leveling up just before you enter a new area. It'll be worth it! [Ed: Now this is sound advice!] ------------------------------------ 2d. Abnormal "Conditions": In battle & Out of battle: - Poisoned = Your HP decrease as you walk, use an antidote or visit the Cleric to get detoxicated. - Cursed = Much like poision except the only way to be saved is by seeing a cleric and choosing uncurse. - Dead = You are dead, you ain't coming back unless you have a leaf of the world tree or you visit a Cleric and pay to be revived. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The Story of DQ Dragon Quest 1 -------------- Long ago, Erdrick (your ancestor) was a great hero who brought the land of Alfgeard from the darkness using the special globes given to him by a freind. The king of Tantagel castle stored these spheres for him after Edrick passed on. Many warriors tried to get the spheres from the Dragon Lord's castle where the King of Tantagel hid them but none returned. Then there was a legend of one of Edrick's descendants defeating the Dragon Lord. You are Edrick's descendent and it is now your duty to save the land from the evil Dragon Lord. Dragon Quest 2 -------------- Again, same thing with Erdrick. Erdrick's descendant who defeated the Dragon Lord came to this land with Princess Gwaelin. Together, they built Torland. Princess Gwaelin had three children, the oldest son got Midenhall, the youngest son got Cannock, and the princess got Moonbrooke. Peace went on for 100 years. Now, you, descendent of the eldest son have to defend the land after the rescent devastation of Moonbrooke by Hargon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Which Emu's/Copiers do DQ1&2 work on? Compatibility list for emulators as of Dec. 13, 1997: ----------------------------------------------------- 1. Esnes v. 0.14: Amazingly enough, this is the emulator of choice for this game! Everything except those cool little transparent shadows for the enemies! (Timko's opinion, not mine) 2. Snes9x DOS v. 0.20/0.24: Sound emulation a little off. Missing transparencies. 3. Snes9x WIN v. 0.24: Same here, except slower than its DOS ver. 4. ZSnes v. 0.20b: 5 second delay on loading BG music, can be irritating. Each time you take a step the screen flashes as if you're poisoned (even if you really aren't). However, if you have VESA 2.0 support (Scitech Display Doctor), you can see the transparencies! 5. NLKSnes v. 0.14b: Has 256 color transparencies, but lacks sound. 6. SPW v. 1.3a: Sprite alignment is off. Character spacing is off. (discontinued) 7. SPW v. 1.7a: Non-playable. (discontinued) 8. VSMC v. 9702d: Pretty good, could be better, costs $35 to actually see what you're doing. (disccontinued) ?. SNEeSe v. 10: ??? (Haven't tried) Copiers: Most all copiers are compatible with DQ1&2, but some (e.g. Professor SF2, Game Doctor series) will need a conversion in Ucon or Snestool to get the ROM into the format that they use. For more information, see http://www.dragonfire.net/~shadow1/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. Problems with Emu's -None (well there is a little bit of incoherant garbage when fading in snes9x .24) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Problems w/ Translation: - Space is one problem with ROM hacking. We have to shorten a lot of things to make them fit. If we had our way, we wouldn't shorten things now, would we? (This is becoming less of a problem as you may have noticed) - I've caught word that there exist 'bonus dungeons' in DQ2, so if anyone can point me in that general direction.. it'll be translated.. if not.. then I guess you all suffer. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7. Special Thanks to Those who Made This Possible: - David Timko! for getting me off my lazy butt and helping me whup up on the enemy. - Whoever wrote Naga, the best editor yet! (now, about that 8-bit plane support...) - P-Funk for finding that blasted 0x32 that was hiding from me... [other Thanks removed because I didn't write them in the first place] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8.
